Ensuring Compliance with Portuguese Fiscal Regulations

In Portugal, fiscalization refers to the mandatory process of electronically issuing and reporting fiscal invoices to ensure tax compliance and transparency. This system requires businesses to generate unique codes for each transaction and transmit relevant data to the Portuguese tax authorities, known as the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira (AT), either in real-time or periodically.

Standard Audit File for Tax (SAF-T):

An XML-based electronic file designed to standardize tax and accounting data, facilitating efficient and accurate reviews of transactions by tax authorities. All VAT-registered entities in Portugal are required to digitally submit their tax and accounting data using SAF-T.

QR Code: Since 2022, invoices and tax documents must include a two-dimensional barcode known as a QR code.

ATCUD (Unique Identification Code): Effective from January 1, 2023, all fiscally relevant documents, including invoices, must feature the unique ATCUD code, enhancing traceability and authenticity.
